Historic Central City Gold Mine to Reopen
By Gargi Chakrabarty, Rocky Mountain News

After being shuttered for nearly 70 years, the historic Bates- Hunter gold mine in Central City is being resurrected by a Minneapolis company. Robust gold prices have prompted Wits Basin Precious Minerals Inc. to invest about $1.2 million over the next year to open the mine and start exploration for the precious metal.
The mine contains the Bates vein of gold, the second lode discovered in Colorado, which helped spark the Colorado gold rush of the mid-1800s. Wits Basin thinks the property could contain up to nine gold veins. The veins in the nearby area historically have produced roughly 750,000 ounces of gold at about 600 feet below surface. The mine was closed in 1936.

But the town already has lured more than half a million cars up the four-lane highway that feeds directly to its Main Street establishments from Interstate 70. The extra traffic has meant big gains in casino revenues.
